Dosimex, much more than calculation software

Dosimex was designed with a pedagogical mindset. Discover the educational modules, the serious game, and the 13 course documents included in the pack.

pedagogy course documents serious game

Dosimex is often presented as a set of radiation protection calculation tools. That’s true, but it’s far from the whole story. From its very creation, Dosimex was designed to teach as much as to calculate. Its founders, Alain Vivier and Gerald Lopez, are first and foremost trainers, one teaching nuclear physics, the other radiation protection at the French Military School of Nuclear Energy Applications (EAMEA). The tools they developed were born in classrooms, not in engineering offices.

This educational purpose is at the heart of Dosimex. And yet, many users are unaware of the full extent of educational resources included in their license.

The educational pack: understanding before calculating

In addition to the 6 operational tools and 5 measurement utilities, Dosimex includes 6 interactive educational modules that help you understand the physics behind the calculations:

  • Photon MRI. Photon-matter interactions: kerma calculation, dose, mean free path, Compton effect, Monte-Carlo trajectory visualization
  • Charged particles MRI. Charged particle-matter interactions: range, fluence-dose coefficient, beta spectra applications
  • ICRU 57 coefficients. Fluence-dose equivalent and normalized air kerma coefficients for electrons, photons and neutrons
  • Nuclear counter. Realistic simulator to explore statistical aspects, efficiency, uncertainties and decision thresholds
  • Radioactive decay. Simulation of probabilistic aspects of nuclear disintegration: lifetime, half-life, fluctuation
  • Serious Game. An educational game highlighting the essential parameters of radiation protection

The Serious Game: learning by experimenting

The Serious Game deserves special mention. It allows you to manipulate the fundamental parameters of radiation protection (distance, time, shielding, activity, radionuclide type) in an interactive environment. It’s an ideal tool for training sessions, but also for any user who wants to develop their intuition for orders of magnitude before moving on to operational calculations.

13 course documents: a reference library

This is perhaps the least-known resource in the Dosimex pack. With your license, you have access to 13 complete course documents covering two major areas:

Radiation-matter interaction and dose calculations

  • Absorbed dose
  • Charged particles MRI
  • Photon MRI
  • Neutron MRI
  • Operational quantities
  • Dose vs activity

Nuclear physics, measurements and associated statistics

  • Introduction to quantum mechanics
  • Nuclear physics
  • Nuclear measurement
  • Decision threshold: principles
  • Decision threshold: applications
  • Statistics: principles
  • Statistics: uncertainties
  • Statistics: hypothesis testing

Learn, then calculate, then master

The fundamental idea behind Dosimex is that understanding comes before calculation. A user who understands radiation-matter interaction mechanisms will be a better user of the operational tools. They will know how to interpret their results, identify edge cases, and adapt their assumptions.

That’s why we encourage all users, including those who purchased Dosimex solely for the operational tools, to explore the educational modules and course documents. They’re there, included in your license, and they can transform your radiation protection practice.
